The Game Genres:

There are millions of games, so we classify them in different genres when looking at their similarities.
Genres also help game designers too choose what they want their games to be like by using the example of other games from various or only one genre.

There are genres and subgenres for games. The subgenres are a type of genre that have one or a few big differences with the other subgenres or with the genre they are part of. For example, an Action game is a genre, and a subgenre of Action is a First-Person Shooter (FPS).

The different game genres (in my opinion) are:
  • Action
  • Racing
  • Adventure
  • RPG (Role-Playing Game)
  • MMO (massively multiplayer online)
  • Sport
This genres have lots of subgenres, and some of that subgenres have others subgenres as well. In conclusion, there are lots of game genres, which makes the gaming market very big, something that is thanked by the players.

This is a brief description of the game genres listed above:

Action:

This genre is formed by games that are defined by fast-pace gameplay, which usually focus on reaction time, hand-eye coordination and combat.

Action Subgenres:
Two of the most known subgenres of action are Shooter & Survival Horror.

Amnesia - the dark descent (survival horror game)

Racing:

Racing games tend to be about some kind of vehicle racing or competing against other vehicles. However, in some games only characters running are featured, like in the case of Sonic R.

Racing Subgenres:
Two of the main subgenres are Kart Racer & Futuristic Racer.

Mario Kart 7 (Kart Racer)

Adventure:

Adventure Games are based on a character or group of characters on a literal adventure. Normally, the whole game is based on a single theme, which helps focus players on the tasks they are carrying out.

Adventure Subgenres:
Two of the best Subgenres are Sandboxes & 3D Plataformers.

Mount and Blande Warband (Sandbox)

RPG:

This is provably one of the oldest genres of games. It's roots come from the strategy tablegame Chess.
RPG games gives you total control of a character, or a group of characters whit different abilities, items, skills, and other attributes. RPG are notorious for really long and "epic" story lines.

RPG Subgenres:
Two famous Subgenres of RPG are Dungeon Crawl & Strategy RPG.

Disgaea 4 (Strategy RPG)

MMO:

This genre refers to a game which is played by many people simultaniously in the same game world. Internet is required to play this type of game.

MMO Subgenres:
There are a few MMO Subgenres, but most of the MMOs are MMORPGs.

WoW - World of Warcraft (MMORPG)

Sport:

This is one of the genre for all sport games, as it's name suggests. The most interesting thing about this genre is that games from it are played in very different ways, even when talking about subgenres. For example, Madden 05 would be completely different to 2K5, and they both come from the same subgenre.

Sport Subgenres:
Two of the many Sport Subgenres are Soccer/Football, and Extreme Sports.

Fifa 15 (Sports Game)
